In an effort to keep information
flowing Pam and I are going to start sending out weekly reminders of recent
issues, new practices or things we haven't talked about in a while.
Please read these weekly reminders and ask questions. We will be adding these reminders
to the RPL Shelvers blog http://rochestershelvers.blogspot.com/ and you can comment there but remember to email us your
comments and questions also. You can view the blog at the library,
although some images are blocked, or on whatever device you receive internet.
The great thing about the blog is that you can contribute there and we can see
an ongoing dialog about what's happening in the library.
We will also print off our reminders
and post them near the whiteboard and as mentioned we will email them to
you. Part of your job is reading and understanding these reminders.
I'll start us off today: 10/30/2013 Reminders
1. Whether loading carts,
sorting carts or shelving carts always take a second look to prevent
errors. Kind of like our government we have
a checks and balances system. Loading, sorting and shelving.
Loading
When loading a cart take a quick
peek at it before sending it into the shelving queue to make sure no materials
are on it that should not be.
Be aware of the labels as these let you know if the item is a children's item,
a bookmobile item or an adult item. Also if the label looks
different/funny check the barcode to see if this item belongs to our library..
we have had some ILLs (items from other libraries) end up on our shelves
recently.
Sorting
When sorting carts we have the
opportunity to make sure the correct items are on the cart and that they are in
the correct order.
Shelving
When shelving materials make sure
you are paying attention to labels
and that we are shelving materials where they don't below... you can't
"check out" and just automatically shelve materials, this is how the
wrong things get in the wrong place. Recently on the j nonfiction
book shelves foreign language materials appeared. If the label has a J
and then an sp, som, fr or other language indicator and then numbers this
belongs after the regular j nonfiction collection where we shelve the foreign language
materials. If you are unsure of what we speak ask Pam or I and we will
take you on a field trip to the shelves and show you what we mean. :)
If materials end up on the shelf in
the wrong place or they shouldn't be there at all then all 3 steps have failed.
2. Lock all locking cases!
This continues to be an issue.
When sorting any adult AV carts there are locking cases. Always make sure
to lock the locking cases after making sure the correct materials are
inside. Examples of materials with locked cases: Rock CDs, Doctor
Who books on CD, International DVDs and foreign language DVDs that go upstairs.
When shelving materials that are
locked take a look at a few neighboring items and see if they are locked and
when taking nonfiction AV carts upstairs, whether you sorted it or not, double
check that locking cases are locked.
Question, comments and suggestions
are appreciated! Let us know what you think our future reminders should
be.
Thank you for all you do,
