Computer Virus Warning, Warning

Worms: good for fishing. Bad for computers.
You may not have heard of it before, but you have probably seen the effects of a new style of computer virus, or worm actually, called BetrayWare. The way betrayware works is a screen will pop up saying windows, (lower case used in virus warning), has detected a virus, malware, spyware, or whatever. It will then ask you if you want to stop this virus by downloading an antivirus program (yeah, riiiight). Frequently you will then be sent to a website asking you to buy the new program. This website is extremely tenacious. The popups will continue until it is cleaned from the system. Sometimes it will just ask you to load the free program to clean the virus. What you are actually loading, now is the virus.

We presently use Panda for Desktops permanent protection. Be suspicious of any other program mentioned in a popup. If you notice anything suspicious about your computer don't hesitate to call someone from the computer center. Also, computer virus writers are notoriously bad spellerz. Be wary if a popup tells you that "windows has fund a cumputer virus on your computer". On Monday of this week a betrayware worm was found on a page computer and the computer's memory had to be wiped and the programs reloaded to get rid of the infection.
